Turkey will begin fast on August 21st, Friday.

Countries accepting unity based on Astronomical Calculations:

The Islamic Society of North America ( ISNA) has announced that Ramadan will start in North America on Saturday 22nd August according to astronomical calculations ( the astronomical New Moon is on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 10:01 Universal Time (1:01 pm Makkah time).

The European Council for Fatwa and Research ( ECFR) said Ramadan starts in Europe a day earlier, also based on astronomical calculations (i. e. 21st August 2009)

Some countries, including Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Oman, Morocco and Mauritania, will be sighting the new moon on Friday, August 21.

Bosnian Muslims will also start fasting on Friday, August 21.

Muslims in Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo, Slovenia, Serbia, Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro will also mark the start of Ramadan on August 21st, Friday.


Ramadan in 2009 will start on Friday, the 21st of August and will continue for 30 days until Saturday, the 19th of September. In North America (USA), in 2009 Ramadan will start a day later - on Saturday, the 22nd of August (tentative dates). Dates will be confirmed when the new moon is actually sighted.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Muslims consider this whole month as a blessed month. They fast during the days of this month and make special prayers at night. People also give more charity and do extra righteous deeds.
