Why did you not use Tajweed colors used by some of the real Mushafs (printed versions) out there?

Color coded Tajweed in iQuran (iOS and Android) may be different from what some printed Mushafs use. Why did we use our own colors? Here are some reasons:

  1. There is currently no set standard in picking colors for particular types of Tajweed. Each publisher has seemingly picked ones as a matter of convenience
  2. Colors used by some printed copies of the Qur'an do not work on mobile screens. The colors we picked were highly optimized for mobile screens as well as ones that did not conflict with other colors used by the app (such as verse playback, bookmarked verses, searched verses and so on)
  3. Colors picked by some printed copies are not color-blind friendly. There is at least 1 in 12 person out there with some form of color blindness ranging from mild to extreme. Alhamdulillah we have a color-blind colleague in our team and were able to pick colors that were not only easy to distinguish with most common forms of color blindness but our color coding also had a lot of thought put into it. The most commonly found Tajweed rules were colored in sharper colors while some colors, like the one for 'Idgham' was picked to effectively 'hide' the letter. This is because Idgham by definition means 'Hiding' and so our selection of colors helped achieve this.
At the end of the day please remember that the very feature, i.e. Color coding Tajweed, is a new 'invention' by man. We have come a long way from printed copies to finally with the help of iQuran, dynamically rendered (i.e. Live) color coded text. In this process the print medium has changed and so have several other requirements. We have tried to improve upon the current system provided by printed copies and have put a lot of research and thought into it. We pray that you will inshAllah enjoy the fruits of our efforts.Â
