I want to be able to search on notes set within contacts

That's available in v1.1. Simply tap on the search bar and ensure you've selected the 'Search All Info' button. Start typing and you will be presented with a list of matched contacts, along with a small icon on the right hand side indicating the kind of match that was made (i.e. whether the phone number, note, company name, contact name etc was matched)

I can no longer forward emails using Groups
