I have lost the ability to sync with Yahoo after installing Groups

As explained in the link above, Groups does not and should not affect the ability to sync with any 3rd party source. Syncs are managed solely by iTunes (please check preferences under iTunes Contact Sync).

Groups cannot affect syncing in any way simply because it is just another 'view' of the Contacts app on the iPhone. It represents the Address Book the same way the Contacts app does, with the only difference being the added functionalities and features. You will need to ensure syncing preferences for Yahoo/Google etc are correct in iTunes.

As a last resort, please also contact Yahoo!/Google/iTunes customer care to see if they have anything to say about this.
