The Major Sins Series - Pride/Boasting - Abu Usama 17/17

Being arrogant, boastful, vain.

The major sins are those acts which have been forbidden by Allah in the Quran and by His Messenger (PBUH) in the Sunnah and which have been made clear by the actions of the first righteous generation of Muslims, the Companions of the Prophet (s.a.w.s).
Allah (s.w.t) says concerning them in the Glorious Quran:
If you avoid the great sins which you are forbidden to do, We shall expiate from you your (small) sins, and admit you to a Noble Entrance (i.e. Paradise) [Quran 4:31]

Although the major sins are many, close to seventy according to Ibn 'Abbas (RA), the following hadeeth highlights the seriousness of such sins:

The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Avoid the seven things that doom a person to Hell." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, what are they?" He said, "Associating others with Allah (shirk); witchcraft (sihr); killing a soul whom Allah has forbidden to kill, except for a lawful reason; consuming riba; consuming the property of orphans; fleeing from the battlefield; and slandering chaste and innocent believing women." [Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2615; Muslim, 89]

It is therefore of paramount importance that Muslims gains knowledge about these major sins and do their utmost to avoid them. In this major sins series, Imaam Abu Usamah goes through the book "Kitaab ul-Kabair" (Book of major sins) written by the great scholar of Islam, Imaam Adh-Dhahabi (rahimahullah) (d. 748 AH). Abu Usamah uses his dynamic and captivating style to expound upon each chapter of the book correcting any weak hadeeth that may be present.

The Major Sins Series-Fleeing from battle-Abu Usama 12/17

Running away from the battlefield

(more)

The Major Sins Series - Not Paying Zakat - Abu Usamah 6/17

Withholding the Zakat (Charity)
Question and Answer Session

In this very but important lecture Sheikh Jafar Idris elaborates on the concept of Faith and Knowledge, a talk which continues from a previous lecture: "Ways of Improving One's Character"

I supplicate to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, asking Him by the blessings and comprehension of His Ayah (Ittaqu Allah wa yu'alimukum Allah) which means: "have Taqwa of Allah, and Allah will teach you" to make our efforts as muslims a tool to increase Taqwa to all of us so as to be eligible that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala teaches us.

We read in the Noble Qur'an:

But those firm in knowledge among them and the believers believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you. And the establishers of prayer [especially] and the givers of zakah and the believers in Allah and the Last Day - those We will give a great reward.
[Al-Baqarah, Ayat 162]

But Allah bears witness to that which He has revealed to you. He has sent it down with His knowledge, and the angels bear witness [as well]. And sufficient is Allah as Witness.
[Al-Baqarah, Ayat 166]

Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
[Ali-Imran, Ayat 18]

"Ittaqu Allah wa yu'alimukum Allah ...Have Taqwa of Allah and Allah Will Teach you, Will Give you Knowledge...

So this means that Taqwa which is faith [consciousness] in Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala helps you to learn more."
